Makapa Lodge Guest Reviews

Ian and Margaret were the most fantastic hosts, as we began our trip in the Cape. From the moment we reached the 'Nest', we relaxed and were able to take in the beautiful surroundings of their garden, which reflects a host of endemic local fauna and flora, as well as a myriad of South Africa's rich birdlife. We were lucky enough to have a pair of nesting Cape Sugarbirds to watch while we braaied. As a couple's retreat, it is fantastic and couldn't come more highly recommended. It was a memorable holiday too, as we got engaged on top of Table Mountain on our second day. Thank you Ian and Margaret, we will be back! Faye and Kurt.

Great place in a stunning location and an absolute birder's paradise - we were treated to Sunbirds and Sugarbirds outside our door every morning. Ian and Margaret are very accommodating hosts with a wealth of local knowledge.

We wanted to get away from the hustle and bustle of Joburg and Makapa was the ideal place to relax and unwind!

The photos on the website didn't do it justice, it was even more perfect in real life!

An ideal spot to hideaway away for a few days but also well located should you want to see the sights of the city. Fantastic value for money. We couldn't believe the yummy full English breakfast was included in the price! We will definitely go back again soon.

July 2013

I began my vacation to South Africa (May, 2013) from Cape Town. My plan was to book directly. I also did not want to stay in the downtown area. After interacting with several B&B accommodations in Cape Town, I settled down on Makapa Lodge mainly because of Ian's prompt and detailed responses that gave me all the information I was looking for as well as brought out his helpful nature. Ian also helped me book a pickup from the Cape Town airport to Makapa Lodge from amongst his contact (who were also excellent folks).

I stayed here for 3 nights and booked 3 suites (around the swimming pool) for 4 seniors, 2 adults and 1 child. Right from the start when I reached Cape Town on 5th May & Makapa lodge till I left on 8th May for the Garden Route, Ian and Margaret made all of us feel at home. The rooms were excellent and equipped with everything that one could need for a family. Our rooms were all around the swimming pool (at the center). There was ample space to park a Volkswagen Kombi which I rented. Views all around were excellent with the Ocean visible from the breakfast room. Ian and Margaret helped us with all the information we needed (and we needed a lot of advice since this was our first trip to SA). The location is excellent (Fishhoek). Its a quite locality with malls etc. located very nearby. I felt it was a very safe locality as well.

They also served us with awesome English breakfast every morning which was whipped up by Margaret & Ian themselves! Makapa has a very nice garden in front of the rooms. Two of the rooms are actually located in the garden. There are many birds that can be seen right there in the garden! We saw the Cape Sugarbird, several sunbirds, shrikes etc. right during our stay.

Here are some pictures:

In the end we were left wondering why we did not choose to stay here longer! Cape Town is a wonderful place and I enjoyed my trips to Boulders Beach, Cape Point, Cape of Good Hope, Table Mountain etc. One thing I regret having missed due to lack of time is shark cage diving.

In fact Makapa was one of the highlights of our vacation in South Africa and everyone in my extended family agreed with that.

I needed a place to stay whilst visiting relatives and booked The Nest with high hopes. I wasn't disappointed. The Nest had everything you could possibly need and more. It was comfortable, private and near to the flora and fauna. Margaret and Ian were on hand if I needed anything. I took up the offer of a half day birdwatching with Ian. This was excellent, especially as Ian is so enthusiastic. I recommend Makapa Lodge for a stay in Capri Village.

May 2013

Makapa Lodge is a very homely guesthouse. Maybe even better than home. A 30 min drive from Cape Town International(CPT) this lodge is situated in Capri Village near the Kommeitjie Road in Fishhoek. There are 5 rooms out of which one is self catering and the rest are bed and breakfast. Supplies for the self catering cabin can be bought in the Pick n Pay store(the walmart of south africa) in longbeach mall which is about 5km from the lodge. It is an absolutely amazing location. There are a few restaraunts around but really good but expensive restaraunts can be found in Camp's Bay, Downtown and Kalk's Bay. The owners of Makapa Lodge, namely Ian and Margaret are very friendly. The rooms are very clean and well organized. Its actually luxury. The lodge will provide brochures of Cape Town. Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope are also close. There is some birdlife around the lodge. The breakfast is absolutely amazing cooked by Ian and Margaret themselves. One more thing, this place is absolutely safe. Our 3 day stay was amazing. At the end we never wanted to leave. I would prefer staying in Makapa Lodge rather than staying in Taj Cape Town, Protea or Tsogo Sun.

May 2013

We spent 4 nights at Makapa Lodge at the end of January 2013. An excellent location as only a short drive from both Cape Point and all the sites of Cape Town with many picturesque towns and fabulous beaches in-between to discover. Ian and Margaret were fabulous hosts and a mine of information of where to visit or eat, when to go and will even book for you. The rooms were lovely, spacious and spotless, the breakfast plentiful and tasty and the added bonus of a delightful pool and gardens to relax in after a days exploring. Highly recommend.

January 2013

Makapa is well kept with comfortable, clean, well furnished rooms, nice relaxing garden, pool and tasty breakfast. Friendly and hospitable hosts. Convenient distance to several sites including Cape Point, Simonstown, Cape Town, lovely beaches and several restaurants and shops.

January 2013

This is a very nice guesthouse situated in the hills above Kommetjie. It was lovely and cool, and the views are lovely. The poolside suite is very comfortable, and the host are very friendly and helpful. The breakfasts are plentiful and tasty. A very relaxing and pleasant stay at the end of our holiday.

December 2012

We spent 3 nights at Makapa Lodge towards the end of February 2012 and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Our poolside suite was very comfortable and well furnished. It opened straight out on the patio area infront of the pool. The views from the room and from the breakfast balcony are breathtaking looking straight out over the Atlantic and Chapmans Peak. The local restaurants are excellent, we particularly enjoyed the Food Barn on the way to Noordhoek, just a 5 minute drive away from Makapa Lodge. There are many restaurants in Fish hoek which are less than 5 minutes drive. Makapa Lodge is a very peaceful haven yet very close to all the major attractions of the area. Nothing is too much trouble for Margaret and Ian and help you plan your day or your evening and are happy to book your reservations at local restaurants. We are hoping to visit the Cape Town area again in 2013 and certainly hope to join Margaret and Ian again.

February 2012

A big thank you to Margaret and Ian for helping our stay to be so great. The location, views, amenities and hospitality were first class. Very helpful advice as to where to eat locally, suitable time to visit Table Mountain, helping to book boarding cards etc. As other reviews state, Makapa Lodge is ideally situated for visits to Cape Town and Cape Point and all other places inbetween. I wish we had been able to stay longer, then we could have relaxed in the lovely garden too. Would love to stay again.

May 2012

Fantastic accommodation with lovely amenities, grounds, and easy access to all the local amenities. I would definitely stay here again.

February 2012

We have now stayed here on two occasions. The lodge itself has a lovely setting and while centrally located has outstanding views across to the ocean and Chapman's Peak.Cape Point and Cape Town itself are only about 30-40 minutes' drive away,Cape Town airport is also within one hour's drive.Access to the main attractions and towns along the peninsula is easy. The accommodation is clean, modern, well appointed and of good size. It is relaxing to sit at the poolside or explore the extensive gardens which are filled with native flowers and shrubs. There is a good sized shopping mall a few minutes' drive away and very good restaurants nearby.Ian and Margaret are wonderful hosts and Ian has a lot of information on local wildlife. They will also advise on sightseeing and local culture. They have two friendly and loveable dogs but are quite happy to keep the dogs away from guests if requested.

November 2011

Makapa lodge was one of our most pleasant stays during our 17 days trip. We wished we booked more nights at this place, but unfortunately we didn't. Officially they do not allow children but our daughter was, and felt, more than welcome at Makapa lodge.

The location is great and an oasis of tranquillity amongst all the busy spots in the area. It's close to Simon's town (penguins) as well as to the cape point national park. The Chapman's peak drive offers some great photo opportunities and is a very nice way to travel to Fishhoek.

The rooms were clean and spacious and equipped with a mini-bar, a very comfortable bed and pool access from the front door.

The pool was clean and the water very warm due to the solar heating system installed by the owners, we also loved the garden outside of the guest house which contains only indigenous plants and trees and therefore attracts beautiful birds and other species.

The owners both were very friendly and open to us and we felt very welcome in this place. They also made a very nice breakfast with good coffee.

If we are ever returning to the cape, we will return here as well.

We highly recommend this accommodation for people who like a quiet and friendly environment with great service.

December 2011

Amazing location on the peninsula and so convenient for all points on the Cape including Cape Town and access to the West Coast. Breakfast situation gives wonderful views and the food is plentiful and satisfying. The accommodation is immaculately clean, spacious and relaxing with everything you need. Ian and Margaret are wonderful hosts with a vast knowledge of the area around. We would love to return and take part in one of Ian's bird watching trips.

September 2011

We stayed 10 days in Makapa Lodge during our trip to South Africa. It is located in a quiet setting and is the perfect place to stay for a relaxing break, as well as being in a great central location within driving distance from Cape Town and other attractions.

The rooms were clean and tastefully decorated. The outside temperature was very hot on some days (30+ degrees) but it remained cool inside with no need for any air conditioning.

Breakfasts were excellent value for money, and views from the breakfast table were incredible.

Ian and Margaret were very good hosts. They were welcoming and very helpful, with lots of suggestions of things to do in the local area.

Overall I could not have wanted more from our stay at Makapa Lodge.
