Simon's Town
Simon's Town developed in the early 1800s as a strategically situated
naval base for Cape Town, when the influence of the navy's officers
was so strong that most people wore white all year round. The South
African navy still keeps its base here, and this 'naval culture'
continues to exert influence over the look and feel of the happy
little cloistered community.
The local hero is the departed but celebrated 'Able Seaman' Just
Nuisance - a Great Dane who won the hearts of many. His landmark
statue, created by South African sculptress Jean Doyle, is located
at the Simon's Town craft market. Many quaint little shops line
the streets, as well as art galleries and restaurants to while away
a tranquil afternoon.
A visit to the take away restaurant, The Salty Sea Dog (a tribute
to Just Nuisance), always goes down well. Nature lovers will be
pleased to visit Boulders beach - the protected haven of the unique
Jackass penguin colonies. Visiting Boulders is a must, and the beach
attracts many families and keen wildlife photographers.
If you're a keen hiker, then the Chacma Trail is just for you.
Indulge in nature with a 31km guided hike over 2 days. The trail
follows the coastline from Cape Point to Simon's Town. But if you
aren't so much into land-lubbing, the harbour offers a gateway to
great entertainment in the forms of deep sea fishing, ocean cruises,
visits to Seal Island, sea kayaking, whale watching and trips to
Cape Point.
